Setting up cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay

Your international safety net, and the two wallets that behave differently from each other.

Credit and debit card

Switch it on in your Mollie dashboard and in our plugin, and you are done.

Why you want it. It is the fallback for everyone who is not from your country. Someone from Ireland, or Canada, or anywhere you did not plan for, will reach your checkout and want a card. Without one, you simply lose them.

It carries subscriptions, so it works for renewing packages.

It costs more than iDEAL, typically a percentage plus a small fixed fee. On large amounts that adds up, which is why iDEAL is still worth having as the default for Dutch customers.

Chargebacks exist. Unlike iDEAL, a card payment can be reversed by the cardholder’s bank weeks later. This is rare in a legitimate business, but it is a real difference worth knowing about.

Apple Pay

It carries subscriptions. Good news if you sell renewing packages.

It only appears in Safari, on an Apple device. This is the thing that wastes people’s afternoons.

If you are testing in Chrome on a Windows laptop and wondering where Apple Pay went, it was never going to be there. Test it on an iPhone or a Mac, in Safari.

Your customer needs a card in their wallet. If there is no card set up on the device, Apple Pay does not offer itself.

Your site must be on https. Apple will not allow payments otherwise.

Domain verification. Apple wants proof that you own your website. In almost every case Mollie handles this automatically and you do nothing at all. If your setup needs a manual step, the plugin has a guide on the Theme activation tab, and Mollie’s Help Center has the current instructions.

Google Pay

It does not carry subscriptions. This is the important difference, and it surprises people who assume the two wallets behave the same.

Google Pay is one-time only. If a customer tries to buy a renewing package and Google Pay is the only method available, they cannot.

So do not rely on Google Pay alone. Pair it with at least one subscription-capable method.

It also needs https and domain verification, handled by Mollie in the same way as Apple Pay.

A sensible setup

For a Dutch estate agency, this covers almost everyone.

iDEAL, because that is what your customers use. Credit and debit card, for everyone from abroad. SEPA Direct Debit switched on at Mollie, so subscriptions renew.

Add Apple Pay if you like. It is popular, it converts well on phones, and it costs you nothing to offer.

Add Bancontact if you sell into Belgium.

That is a checkout that works, without looking like a departure board.
