Creating your Mollie account

Mollie is the company that actually moves the money. Our plugin is the bridge between your Houzez website and them.

You need an account with them. It is free, it takes about ten minutes, and you do not need to be a business expert to get through it.

Signing up

Go to mollie.com and create an account.

Mollie will ask for your business details: your company name, your Chamber of Commerce number, your VAT number if you have one, and your bank account. This is not Mollie being nosy. Payment providers are legally required to know who they are handling money for.

Have those details to hand and it goes quickly.

The approval step

Once you have signed up, Mollie reviews your account before it will let you take real money. This is normal and it happens to everyone.

It usually takes a day or two. Sometimes they come back with a question, so keep an eye on your email.

You do not have to wait for approval to get started. You can install the plugin, connect it with your test key, and check that your whole setup works, all while Mollie is still reviewing you. By the time they approve you, you will be ready to flip the switch and start selling.

Switching on your payment methods

This is the step people miss, so here it is in plain language.

Signing up does not automatically give you iDEAL, or cards, or anything else. You have to switch each method on yourself.

In your Mollie dashboard, go to Settings, then Payment methods.

Switch on the ones you want to offer. Some of them are available immediately. Others need Mollie’s approval first, and will sit as “requested” until they come through.

A method that is off at Mollie will never appear at your checkout, no matter how many times you tick it in our plugin. It has to be on in both places.

The one to remember if you sell subscriptions

If any of your packages renew automatically, switch on SEPA Direct Debit as well.

This catches almost everybody out, so let us be clear about why.

When a customer subscribes and pays with iDEAL, that first payment also sets up a mandate: their permission for you to collect future payments from their account. Every renewal after that is collected by direct debit, not by iDEAL.

So if SEPA Direct Debit is not enabled at Mollie, the mandate cannot be charged, and your renewals will quietly never happen. You will not find out for a month, and by then you will have a list of customers who think they are subscribed and are not.

You do not have to show SEPA Direct Debit at your checkout. It simply has to be switched on in your account.

What happens next

Your account exists. Now you need your API keys.
