Subscriptions are not renewing

The first payment worked. A month later, nothing was collected.

Cause 1: SEPA Direct Debit is off at Mollie

This is the one, nine times out of ten, and it surprises everybody.

Even when your customer paid the first time with iDEAL, the renewals afterwards are collected by direct debit. That is how recurring payments work at Mollie: the first payment sets up a mandate, and the mandate is then charged by SEPA Direct Debit.

If SEPA Direct Debit is not switched on in your Mollie account, that mandate can never be charged, and the renewal silently does not happen.

Go to your Mollie dashboard, then Settings, then Payment methods, and switch on SEPA Direct Debit.

You do not have to show it at your checkout. It just has to exist on your account.

Cause 2: The package is set to one-time

Go to Real Estate, then Packages, and open the package.

Find the block called Mollie Settings, and check whether it is set to subscription or to one-time payment.

A one-time package does exactly what it says: the customer pays once, gets access for the period you set, and that is that. It will never renew, because you told it not to.

Cause 3: The customer paid with a method that cannot renew

Look at the Payment methods tab in the plugin. Each method is labelled either Subscriptions or One-time.

If your customer subscribed using a method that is one-time only, there is no mandate to charge.

The fix is to only offer subscription-capable methods on packages that renew.

Cause 4: The direct debit failed

This one is not a bug. Sometimes a customer simply does not have the money, or the account has been closed.

When a renewal fails, the plugin does not give up straight away. It gives the customer a grace period, sends a reminder, and retries.

You can see all of this on the Transactions tab, and the customer sees it in their own dashboard.

While you are here

Ignore Houzez’s own Enable Recurring Payments and Auto Recurring Payments settings, under Theme Options, Membership. Houzez’s own help text says they are for PayPal and Stripe, and it is right. They do nothing for Mollie, and switching them on will not fix anything.

Our plugin handles recurring entirely through the Mollie Settings block on each package.
